Kollam

At a Glance:

Kollam is a a beautiful town situated on the Ashtamudi Lake, around 70 kms from Trivandrum, the capital city of Kerala. Kollam shares its eastern borders with the state of Tamil Nadu, the northern side is bounded by Pathanamthitta, southern by Trivandrum and towards the west lies the stretched out Lakshwadeep Sea. The place is connected with the rest of the state with continuous railway lines and roads. The town can be seen as sandwiched between Ashtamudi Lake and the Lakeshwadeep Sea.
Adventure Park : Near Ashramam ground, 2 Km. away from KSRTC Bus stand, Kollam. Here there are so many facilities to entertain children as well as adults.
Ashtamudukkayal : Boating through this back waters is thrilling experience Kollam- Alappuzha water route is throigh Ashtamudikkayal. Chinese nets ( Cheenavala ) fixed in the backwaters adds the beauty of this place.The scene Ashtamudi Lake is a great place to hanker for in the Kollam district. The house boat trips here are great pleasures and. The voyage in boat to Munroe Islands is a wonderful experience. The popular cruises one can avail at the place are Kayal Pradkashina Cruise and Sayanthanam Sunset Cruise.
Thirumullavaram Beach : The beach, 6 Km. away from the town is suitable for see bath and sun bath. The place features a number of legends and located on the beach is Maha Vishnu Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple houses two images of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva facing the east and the west directions.
Thankassery : Located 5K.m. from Kollam town.The light house about 44 mtr. high is very famous. It is opened for visotors, from 3.30 pm. till 5.30 pm. Kochupilamoodu Beach : A beautiful park beside this beach attracts so many visitors to this place.
Sastamkotta: The largest fresh water lakes lies 29 Km. away from the town.

There is a famous Sastha Temple at this place. The small town of Sasthamcotta, located about 19 kms from Kollam, is a very beautiful place and the fresh water lake at Sasthamcotta is one of the largest in Kerala.
Parabrahma Temple ,Ochira : Situated 34Km. away from the town. The peculiarity of this temple is that there ware no walls or presiding deity. The 'Ochirakkali' and 'Panthrandu Vilakku' celebrated on 1st and 2nd of Malayalam month 'Mithunam' is famous.
Chenthurni : A wild life sanctuary, situates 66Km. away from Kollam. Thenmala Forest Division Head Quartes is located here.
Neendakara: A famous fishing center situated on the northern side of the town NH-47. There is also a harbor here.
Kulathooppuzha: Situated 64 Km. away from Kollam and 74 Km. from Thiruvananthapuram. The famous Sree Dharma Sastha Tmple is located here. The main festival of this temple is 'Vishumahotsavam'.
Aryankavu : THis place is 80 Km. way from Kollam on the way to Chenkotta. There is a famous Sastha Temle, where the festivals in December.
Punalur : An Industrial centre situated 46 Km. away from Kollam. The hanging bridge built in 1879 over the Kallada river is a special attraction of this place.
Palaruvi : The beautiful waterfalls 5 Km. from Arayankavu on Pun
alur- Chenkotta route, at a height of 92 meters above the sea level. THere are so
many waterfalls around this place.
Thevalli Palace : This palace located on the banks of the Arabian sea, attracts the tourists very much for its architectural beauty.
Thevally palace is popular for the legendary of a British resident with a lady from the palace. This place is currently occupied by the Public Works Department and the army


Ganapathi Temple, Kottarakkara: A famous temple located at Kottarakkara.
Vallikkavu : The Head Quaters of 'Matha Arithanandamayi Madam' is located at this place Jadayupara : A vast rocky area and a small temple on this place. Jedayupara is a huge rock the reference of which has been mentioned in the epic 'Ramayana'. The rock is believed that, the spot where the large bird 'Jedayu' fell after failing to spot Ravana while he was taking Sita away.
Achankovil : The Sastha Temple at this place is very famous.

  1. Please highlight the jedayupara with more details and give some pictures. It will become the most interesting tourist spot in that area.
    Sadly the area is already under the control of the RSS youths and they are running the small temple. There should be some guides who can really help and to avoid accidents.
